Carlsbad, CA – Army and Navy Academy is proud to announce that it has been officially certified as a Gurian Center for Educational Excellence. This designation underscores ANA’s commitment to single-gender education and our dedication to employing teaching techniques tailored to how boys learn best. The Gurian Institute, co-founded by Michael Gurian, focuses on understanding gender differences in learning and development, emphasizing the importance of recognizing these differences to enhance educational outcomes. By aligning with the Gurian Institute, ANA integrates brain-based strategies into its curriculum, fostering an environment where boys can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. The Institute will be releasing a white paper on ANA’s approach to single gender education at the end of April. Earlier this month, Academy President Barry Shreiar was interviewed on the Wonder of Parenting Podcast hosted by Michael Gurian, where he discussed the Academy’s pedagogy and practice.

Nationwide, boys face challenges such as lower academic achievement and higher dropout rates compared to girls. Factors contributing to this achievement gap include teaching methods that may not align with boys’ learning styles and a lack of male role models in educational settings. By understanding and addressing these issues, educators and parents can implement strategies to support boys’ academic success.

Founded in 1910, Army and Navy Academy is a private, all-boys military boarding school located on the Pacific Ocean in Carlsbad, California. For over a century, the Academy has transformed the lives of young men, combining a structured military environment with rigorous academics, athletics, leadership training, and a deep focus on character development.

TODAY, THE ACADEMY SERVES STUDENTS IN GRADES 7–12 FROM ACROSS THE UNITED STATES AND AROUND THE WORLD.

Barry Shreiar, Academy President, shared, “Virtues-based education helps young men to develop resilience in the face of life’s many challenges. We prioritize virtue in all that we do, a fact that is reflected in the environment of dignity and respect that pervades our campus. Our core values of Honor, Integrity, Gratitude, Compassion, Respect, and Responsibility don’t just guide our Cadets: they are guidelines that help us all strive to uplift, serve, and inspire others. We teach our boys to live these values every day and in every interaction.”

We invite you to join us in doing our part to shape a world where human excellence is defined not only by achievement but by character, where every individual is valued and empowered to contribute to a brighter tomorrow.
