(VISTA, CA – March 10, 2025) – National Jewel Day is this Thursday, March 13. It is dedicated to celebrating the splendor and beauty of jewels and gemstones as well as those makers who create beautiful jewelry with them.

The time is ideal to celebrate as U.S. sales of jewels and gemstones are on the rise. According to Tenoris, a trend analytic company supplying retail and consumer trend data for the global jewelry industry, the combined annual revenue of the U.S. jewelry retail industry is about $30B. Sales rose 1.4 percent in 2024 with an expected growth rate of 4.1 percent through 2030. That’s a lot of jewels!

Studies show that women 25-34 purchase the most jewelry, while people 45-54 spend the most on precious gems (approximately $300 per year). Another fun fact is that California has the most jewelry stores in the U.S. with more than 6,400 across the state.

Here in San Diego, there are 40 jewelry stores listed on the www.theknot.com website. However, that doesn’t include the countless regional artisans, makers, and designers found throughout our county. It also doesn’t include shop owners like Phil Fischman, GIA, GG, and Owner of Beads, Crystals & More, the largest store of its kind in San Diego County. Fischman carries an extensive array of beautiful gemstones, crystals, and beads from around the world in his shop at 350 E. Broadway in downtown Vista.

Fun Facts:

1. Throughout much of human history, jewels have been part of our story. Archeological evidence of gemstone jewelry dates back to 4,500 BC with the Ancient Sumerians in Mesopotamia who used Agates and Lapis Lazuli stones.

2. Precious gems are a smaller group of rare, harder, and more durable gemstones of higher quality and value.

3. Jewels (which can also be defined as gems) are part of a broader group that are prized and widely utilized but have a different hardness and rarity than Precious Gems. These include Turquoise, Opals, Lapis Lazuli and Amethysts.

4. The world’s top 10 most popular gemstones are: Diamonds, Emeralds, Sapphires, Rubies, Opals, Amethysts, Topaz, Aquamarines, Tanzanite & Peridots.

5. Aquamarine is the birthstone of March. Its blue green color inspires visions of the sea. It symbolizes healing and love and has been revered since the days of the Ancient Egyptians. Sailors often carried them for protection.

6. The Sapphire is America’s National Jewel.

7. Gems are found all over the world, but in the U.S., the majority of gems are found and mined in Arizona, Colorado, and Nevada. Other states where a growing number of gemstones are found are Tennessee, North Carolina, and Maine.
