Women’s Basketball Cougars Take Down Monterey Bay, 76-48

SEASIDE, Calif. – The No. 19/RV Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team (16-3, 13-2 CCAA) recorded its third CCAA season-series sweep with a 76-48 victory at Cal State Monterey Bay (5-15, 1-14 CCAA) on Thursday night at The Kelp Bed.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 5-0, the Cougars went on a 16-2 run to close out the first quarter.
CSUSM went 8-of-8 at the free throw line in the opening 10 minutes of play.
The Cougars dominated in the second quarter by outscoring the Otters 30-12 after shooting 76.9 % (10-of-13) to take a 46-19 lead into the break.
CSUSM shot 65% (13-of-20) from the field in the first half while holding the Otters to 38.1% (8-of-21).
The Cougars connected on seven of their nine 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes while CSUMB made just two of their nine.
CSUSM extended its lead to 30-plus points in the third quarter, taking a 66-32 lead into the final 10 minutes of action.
The Cougars took their largest lead of the game at the 4:28 mark of the fourth quarter on Kate Carlson’s two made free throws that made it 73-39.

FAST BREAKS
With two 3-pointers in the game, Forrester has raised her career-total to 212 and is now 14 3-pointers away from tying the CCAA record of 226 held by Chico State’s Maddy Wong.
CSUSM scored a season-best 30 points in the second quarter. The last time the Cougars scored 30 in a quarter was against Stanislaus State on Feb. 17 in The Sports Center.
CSUSM posted its best free throw percentage of the season at 88.5% (23-of-26) when going to the line more than 20 or more times.
The Cougars recorded their third-highest field-goal percentage of the season, going 22-of-45 for 48.9%.
Raising their win streak to 10, the Cougars are now 11-2 in the all-time series against the Otters and are 5-2 when playing in The Kelp Bed.
The Cougars completed their fourth consecutive season series victory over the Otters, skipping the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons because the two teams only met once.
CSUSM remains in second place in the CCAA standings, one game behind conference-leader Cal State Dominguez Hills (14-1 CCAA) and two games ahead of third-place Cal State LA (11-4 CCAA).
